We are very likely to hear much more of Jim Cummings in the future. This extension of his original and brilliantly excruciating short about a bereaved cop struggling to say goodbye to his mother at her funeral is unlike anything you have seen before. By turns funny and horrifying, Thunder Road has real beauty in its evocation of all-too-human awkwardness, embodied in Cumming’s grimacing expression that seems to waver between a smile and a sob. Very different. Very special.

“I have seen humanistic American filmmaking’s future, and its name is Jim Cummings.”
“Remarkably, Cummings manages to piece these oddball vignettes into a vivid drama with its own unpredictable, startlingly lovely shape.”
