Hirokazu Kore-eda, long a favourite of Lewes Film Club, won the prestigious Palme d’Or in 2018 for this film (his 13th!). Like all of Kore-eda’s films, it is characterised by a deftness, a light but incisive touch that looks deep into human and societal relations. You may feel like the narrative of a family taking in a young girl sounds familiar, but then, you will only be surprised. Gleefully questioning society’s moral high grounds, Shoplifters is an unforgettable stay in the life of a rather unique family.
