Faces Places

Agnès Varda, JR (2017)

Agnès Varda, JR Rated 12A Run time 94 mins

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Academy Awards

This documentary and road movie is a collaboration between the 90-year-old director Agnès Varda and a 35-year-old French street artist who calls himself simply JR. The odd couple go on the road all over France in JR’s specially adapted van, which is like a mobile photo booth. They arrive in villages and towns and persuade locals to have their pictures taken in the back of his vehicle, which he can then print so they are large enough to cover the sides of barns, houses and even a stack of shipping containers. ‘Faces Places’ is a celebration of lives that too often go unnoticed, the passage of time and the nature of memory. A powerful and complex work.
