The title of the film refers to that blackest period in Irish history, the Great Irish Famine of 1847. Feeney, a hardened Irish Ranger who has been fighting for the British Army abroad, abandons his post to return home and reunite with his family. He has seen more than his share of horrors, but nothing prepares him for the hopeless destruction of his homeland by the famine that has brutalised his people.
